You will be aware the country is in the midst of disaster situation due to the very heavy rains that we have been experiencing over the past few days. The details given below may help you to have an idea of the severity of the situation on the ground.

17 Districts in Sri Lanka have been affected by severe floods and landslides during the last 5 days. As of 19th May 2016, 43 persons are dead, 16 persons still missing, 414,000 affected, of which 223,687 have been displaced from their homes either due to the floods, landslides or threat of landslides.

The Board of Social responsibility (BSR) of Diocese of Colombo (the Church of Ceylon) has initiated an Emergency relief and rehabilitation program for the victims.

At the moment the BSR has set up an Emergency Communication Centre and the Hotline number is 0114 848 577, 0114 848 833, 0766 417 741 (+94 766 417 741)

The BSR has also already started relief programs in a few areas with support of the Clergy and government officials.

Since the government and some non-governmental organizations are already engaged in a well coordinated relief effort, the BSR primarily intends to engage in Rehabilitation and livelihood support in selected areas once the affected persons return to their homes, while they will also supplement the relief work where needed.

In the light of the above, if you feel led to support the diocesan rehabilitation effort, please partner us by sending us your contribution.

We appeal to you for your prayers and cooperation towards assisting the affected people of our nation at this time of suffering and need.

Thank You

With Peace and Blessings

Yours in Christ
Rt. Revd. Dhiloraj Canagasabey
Bishop of Colombo
