With the introduction of the coffee plantations by the British in the eighteen twenties, Christianity came to the hills. The superintendents of the estates felt that they needed a common place to worship and spread the Gospel among workers. After opening new plantations in Ragala and Uda Pussellawa the growth of a strong Christian community needs a place of worship was solely felt.
During this time with the hard work and dedication of the plantation people, Christ Church Ragala was built. This Church was consecrated on 13th June, 1887. This year the church celebrated her 135th year anniversary. Bishop Dushantha Rodrigo started his ministry in this area as a Deacon and a priest. This place is very close to his heart, and he had a good connection with the people. This was his first visit as the Bishop of Colombo to this area. During his visit he visited Alma and Liyanwela estates, the people in those area welcomed the Bishop with joyfulness. While talking to them people remembered the mission and ministry of Bishop in this area 28 years ago.
To mark 135 years of service in the area a church board was opened by the Bishop at the roundabout of Ragala and Uda Pussellawa junction.
13th July 2022, 12 candidates were confirmed on the confirmation service, Bishop encouraged and challenged the community during his sermon. He preached saying ‘Do what you can during this time', He motivated the Children, youths and the parents in his sermon.
It was a blessed day to our community.
