The Bishop of Colombo the Rt. Rev. Dushantha Rodrigo presided at the Service of Confirmation at St. Mark’s Church, Badulla. What a wonderful opportunity and a blessing it was for the family of St. Mark’s, as it was also Church of Ceylon Sunday.
The service had the active participation of the youth of the parish and the children of the Sunday school. The service began on the lawn where the Bishop was welcomed with betel leaves. Thereafter there was a brief introduction of the Church of Ceylon by a member of the Youth Fellowship supported with posters and by the Sunday school.
This was an opportunity for the youth to bring out their gifts and talents. Two hand painted banners with the coat of arms of the two dioceses done by the youth were taken in the procession. The youth had also created a cut out of Sri Lanka which was used for the lighting of the lamp, with one lamp for each district of Sri Lanka. They also used it for the intercessions where each youth leading the biddings brought the prayers of the people for each province.
The Bishop, being a teacher himself, used all the props available to enlighten the congregation not only about the Church of Ceylon, but beautifully connected the theme for the day, “Who is my neighbour?”, even articulating the Gospel to today’s context. The liturgy involved one and all, a true celebration of the church and who we are. It was an inspiring day for the 7 candidates who were confirmed.
