The School for the Deaf and School for the Blind Ratmalana celebrated their Founder’s Day on Friday 17th June. The Founder was Ms. Mary Chapman, who arrived in the island in 1910 on the request of the Church of England Zenana Missionary Society(CEZMS). Her attention was drawn to the pitiable state of the deaf and blind in Ceylon and was concerned that nothing had been done for them. She raised the necessary funds and sought out deaf and blind children. The school was birthed in 1912 with just four deaf children.
Not only was it the 110th anniversary of the school but it also happened to be the 100th anniversary of the Chapel of the Holy Child, the chapel of the two schools. The celebrations commenced with a Holy Communion service .The Celebrant was the Lord Bishop of Colombo, Rt. Rev. Dushantha Rodrigo. The choir consisted of the Blind children singing hymns whilst the deaf children interpreted the hymns into sign language. The Bible readings and the prayer of intercession were by the students of the schools. The service was followed by fellowship breakfast. The two schools thereafter celebrated the event separately in their Halls. The history of the school was related to the students through creative means. The students showcased their talents with great enthusiasm .They paid tribute to the Founder and the past principals of the schools. It was a day of great joy and celebration.
