Two hundred years ago, on September 18th, 1818, the very first legally established Anglican body in Ceylon (Sri Lanka), the Archdeaconary of Colombo saw light of day.
The Diocese of Colombo celebrated this significant and historic event with a service of thanksgiving at the Cathedral of Christ the Living Saviour on Saturday 16th September. Ven Chrisantha Mendis, the 22nd Archdeacon of Colombo was the preacher at this service at which the celebrant was the Bishop of Colombo, Rt. Rev. Dhiloraj Canagasabey. His Excellency James Dauris, British high Commissioner in Sri Lanka and Mrs. Dauris were special invitees.
After the service, 23 gas balloons in varied colours, each representing an Archdeacon of Colombo, with a scripture verse inscribed were released.
