An Environmental programme was held after Sunday service by the CEMET at St Marks church Dandugama on 27th May 2018. Approximately 39 parishioners participated (21 Male and 18 Female) 4 members of CEMET (Ms. Sharmini Wickramaratne, Ms Sudeni Perera, Ms Sato Jayamaha and Ms. Jennifer Aturupane) participated.
Ms Sudeni did a presentation where she emphasized on the importance of each individual accepting that taking care of the environment was our own responsibility and not the responsibility of others. She requested each person to grow more trees, take care of one’s own garbage ….etc.
2 officials from the Waste Management Authority (Gampaha region) then did a presentation on the problems associated with ad hoc disposal of waste and the importance of waste segregation. They said there was very limited space in the Western province for garbage dumps and so requested everybody to practice the 3R principle.
There was then a discussion about the problems faced in the area.
1. Non collection of garbage in Dandugama and Mahakotuwa areas
2. Problems caused by piggeries in the area
The following suggestions were made
1. That we have an environmental programme for the community so that waste segregation can be practised in the area and the authorities can arrange for segregated garbage collection.
2. A letter be written to the authorities about the problems so that action can be taken
3. A parisara pola be held to dispose of recyclable waste
8 budded fruit plants were taken to the church for planting. (Could not be planted at that time due to the rainy weather)
We hope and pray that this programme will be the start of many more activities towards protecting the environment and solving the environmental problems in the Ja-Ela area.
