Rt. Revd. Dhiloraj Ranjit Canagasabey was installed as the 15th Bishop of Colombo in May 2011. He is also at present the Presiding Bishop of the Church of Ceylon.
His family originates from Batticaloa in the Eastern Province of Sri Lanka and had his education and formation under the Jesuits of the Roman Catholic Church at St Michael’s College, Batticaloa. Thereafter he obtained his twin tertiary degrees in Theology and later Divinity from the University of Serampore, India. He had his theological training at the Theological College of Lanka Pilimatalawa, following which he was ordained a Deacon in 1983 and a Priest a year later.
Following his ordination, Bishop Dhilo served as assistant curate of the rural parish at Ragala in the tea plantation region of Nuwara Eliya. From 1985-1987 he served in the large urban parish of Nugegoda ministering also in the adjacent parish of Mirihana. His first incumbency was at The Church of the Ascension in the important regional centre of Bandarawela in the central hill country and from here he was transferred to one of the largest parishes in the capital Colombo, that of St. Paul’s Church, Milagiriya.
In 1998, Bishop Dhilo was installed as the 3rd Archdeacon of Nuwara Eliya and served there until his election and Episcopal ordination as the 15th Bishop of the Diocese of Colombo.
Bishop Dhilo has a special interest in the youth ministry and served as Youth Chaplain of the Colombo South Deanery and also as Chaplain of the Church of Ceylon Youth Movement and on the Boards of several YMCA’s. Other important positions he has held in the diocese were as Assistant Editor of the Colombo Diocese’s Magazine “Ceylon Churchman”, member of, the Standing Committee of the Church of Ceylon, Governing Body of the Theological College of Lanka. Pilimatalawa, the Theological Commission, Anglican –Roman Catholic Commission.
He was also Chaplain to one of the diocese’s leading regional schools, St. Thomas’ College, Bandarawela also functioning for some time as its acting Head Master.
As a priest, he participated in several international events; the Asian Ecumenical Course of the CCA, 1985, Regional conference on Education, Bangkok, 1986, the World Festival of Youth Students, Moscow, 1989 and the Rippon Diocese Exchange programme, 1993.
While serving as the Archdeacon of Nuwara Eliya, he was appointed as Bishop’s Commissary, acting on behalf of the Bishop of Colombo during his absence from the country on several occasions.
He presently serves as the chairperson of the National Christian Council of Sri Lanka, the Patron of the Ceylon Bible Society and as a member of the Governing Body of World Vision, Sri Lanka.
Bishop Dhilo’s appointment as head of the Diocese of Colombo was during a time of increased political and religious tensions. Continuing the stand of his predecessors in office, he spoke, wrote and gave leadership in mobilizing the church against the harassment of religious minorities and against certain actions of the state contrary to democratic norms.
He is married to Harshini, the daughter of a past president of the Methodist Church of Sri Lanka and has a daughter Dhilukshini, and a son Dhiranjan, both of whom are married and two grandchildren.
